PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (June 1, 2022) – Newport Car Museum will be at the start of the Hemmings Motor News Great Race on Saturday, June 18 at Rocky Point in Warwick, R.I. Look for the Newport Car Museum van and a special car from the Museum that will be on display. The Great Race is the world’s premiere old car rally, with 140 of the world’s finest antique automobiles competing for $150,000. Cars will start lining up at the park at 8 a.m. with the first car leaving at 10:30 a.m. The finish will be in Fargo, N.D., on June 26.

“In the 39-year history of the Great Race, the event has made its way east and west and north and south through 46 of the 48 contiguous United States,” event director Jeff Stumb said. “In 2022, the Great Race will finally be able to add the last two states to the list – Rhode Island and North Dakota.”

The nine-day, 2,300-mile adventure will travel to 19 cities in Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota and North Dakota.

“Great Race Newport Day”

Thursday, June 16 is “Great Race Newport Day” where participants have spare time before and after they register their cars in Providence to visit Newport and the Newport Car Museum. It’s not known just how many cars will arrive in the Museum’s giant parking lot (and they won’t all arrive at one time), but the window of opportunity for catching some of them is better between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. when the “Barito Bowl” Food Truck will be onsite for both participants and visitors to enjoy. Parking is free and the Museum is open 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily.
