The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT R is designed as a track car that can be purchased off the showroom floor and driven on the street. It has sinister aesthetics and adrenaline-pumping performance to match. The handcrafted AMG 4.0 litre V8 twin turbo engine with “hot inside V” (both turbos reside in the engine valley and can spin up to 186,000 rpm), produces 577 hp and 516 ft-lbs of torque. AMG Traction Control with 9 input levels is controlled by a dial in the center console, and the chassis and powertrain response can be altered using five drive modes: Individual, Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus, and Race. The GT R has four-wheel steering;the rear works in step with a quicker-ratio steering rack up front. At speeds of up to 62 mph, the rear wheels are steered in the opposite direction of the front wheels in order to improve agility. Over 62 mph, they are steered in the same direction to improve stability.

Nicknamed the “Beast from Green Hell’ in reference to the Nurburgring Race course in Germany, the GT R beat the prior record lap holders for production cars: the 2017 Dodge Viper ACR and the 2019 Corvette ZR-1, both of which are on display here at the Newport Car Museum..
